I can’t say it enough: Social media is all about Content. The better your content, the easier it is to build a loyal following of readers. Marketing nowadays is all about Content Marketing. New jobs are being created as we speak. Content Marketing Officer, Content guardian, Content Strategy expert and so on. The easiest way to start creating content is through blogging. A blog, also known as web log, is an online diary or notepad. A very effective way to personalise what you have to say. And it is inherently viral. It has links to other places on the web, you can add a video or a photo and you can invite people to comment.
So I recommend everybody to start blogging. But how do you start your blog. The leading blogging platform is WordPress. It’s being used by the majority of the bloggers out there. Many businesses have built their entire web site on WordPress. There are two versions of WordPress. On WordPress.com, your blog is being hosted by Wordpess. On WordPress.org you host your own blog. WordPress.com is the easiest and the cheapest. Yoy just sign up, select a template, add your first post, publish it and your blog is live. WordPress.org is a bit more complicated. You need to download WordPress, install it on your own web server, set up a database and then create your blog. For many people this looks like a complicated way of doing things. But fortunately, it’s not. I just moved my web site to WordPress.org and in this post I will share what I’ve learned.
There are four simple steps in starting your own blog on WordPress.org.
Step 1: You don’t have to go through the complicated process of downloading WordPress on your own hosting provider and set up your own database. There are providers that have already done that for you. Godaddy.com is one of them. Sign up for godaddy and buy a hosting account. I suggest you go for the Deluxe package. In this package you can host multiple web sites.
Step 2: Buy your own domain name. Godaddy.com has a Domain Names purchasing service. You can buy them with or without Email hosting. WHen you buy a hosting package you get one email address for free. Remember that nowadays you are no longer restricted to the standard URLs like .com, .co.uk etc. If you already have a URL, I suggest you transfer the domain to Godaddy.com. That’s an easy process. Check this article for instructions of how to do this.
Step 3: Install WordPress. Here is the difficult bit made easy. Go to “visit your account” and click “web hosting”. Then click the “launch” button behind your URL. This will take you to the screen where you can install the WordPress app. Click on WordPress and you will see that it installs WordPress and the database. It will ask you for a blog name and password and after a few minutes, your blog will be installed.
Step 4: Go to “yourURL.extension/wp-admin”, enter user name and password and start setting up your blog. Your standard wordpress installation doesn’t come with any templates so the best thing to do is to search for a free wordpress.org template here. and if you find one, search for that template under “add new template” and then you can install the new template. Change the settings of the template to your preferences. Once your happy with the look and feel of your blog you are ready to start blogging. All you have to do is to add your first post and publish it.
